How to plumb in a washing machine

Plumbing in a washing machine is easily done with the right tools and a bit of know-how. Use our simple tips to guide yourself through the process:

  1. Choose a suitable location: Decide where you want to place the washing machine. It should be near a water source and a drain. Also, ensure there is enough space for the machine to be installed.
  2. Gather some basic tools: You will need a spanner, pliers, and a screwdriver. You may also need a hacksaw, depending on the type of pipework.
  3. Turn off the water supply: Locate the isolation valve near the water source and turn it off. This will prevent water from flowing through the pipes while you work. (Check our previous blog for advice on how to turn off the water if you’re not too sure about what to do or where to find the valve).
  4. Connect the water supply: Connect the machine’s cold water supply hose to the water source using a spanner. If you want a hot wash, you will need to connect a hot water supply hose as well.
  5. Connect the waste pipe: Connect the waste hose to the drain using a plastic standpipe or a trap. Make sure it is tightly secured in place with clips.
  6. Connect the machine: Connect the water supply and waste pipes to the washing machine. Tighten the connections with pliers, but don’t over-tighten them.
  7. Test the connections: Turn on the water supply and check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the connections and test again.
  8. Level the machine: Use a spirit level to make sure the machine is level. Adjust the feet of the machine as necessary.
  9. Plug in and test: Run a test cycle to make sure the appliance is working correctly.

Bob’s your uncle! You’re done.

By following these simple steps, you should be able to plumb in a washing machine in the UK without any problems. But if you feel unsure about any part of the process, it is always best to seek professional help from a plumber or electrician. If your machine is already in full spin, get the kettle on and give yourself a pat on the back!
